Meet Bird: A Private AI Companion That Runs Entirely Offline

Why we're building emotionally aware AI that remembers you — without ever sending your life to the cloud.

In 2023, the U.S. Surgeon General did something unusual: he issued a formal public health advisory about loneliness. The finding was hard to ignore — about half of American adults report feeling lonely, and chronic social isolation carries a risk of early death comparable to smoking up to 15 cigarettes a day. (U.S. Surgeon General advisory, 2023)

We started Orracle because we believe technology spent the last decade making that problem worse, and it's time it started helping.

But there's a catch most "AI companion" products would rather not talk about: to be your companion, they have to record you. Your voice, your routines, the small daily details you'd only share with someone you trust — all of it streamed to a server you'll never see, stored on a company's terms, kept on a company's schedule.

We didn't want to build that. So we didn't.

Meet Bird

Bird is a small AI companion you can set on a shelf, a nightstand, or a kitchen counter. You talk to it, and it talks back — but more than that, it remembers. It knows your name and the things going on in your life. It picks up the thread of the conversation you had yesterday. It notices when it's been a while since you last spoke, and it reacts. Over time, Bird feels less like a gadget and more like a familiar presence in the room.

Here's what makes Bird different: everything it knows about you stays inside the device. No cloud account. No data uploaded. No one listening in from somewhere far away. Bird listens, thinks, and speaks entirely on its own hardware, sitting right there in front of you.

If your internet goes down, Bird still works. If our company vanished tomorrow, Bird would keep running. That isn't an accident — it's the whole design.

Privacy isn't a setting. It's the architecture.

Most products treat privacy as a checkbox you toggle, buried three menus deep. We treat it as the foundation the entire thing is built on. We call it privacy by architecture: if the data never leaves the device, there is nothing to leak, sell, or hand over.

This is a genuinely harder way to build. It's far easier to ship everything off to a data center and stream it back and forth. Doing the work locally — on small, affordable hardware — took real engineering. But we think it's the only honest way to ask someone to let an AI into their daily life, especially the people who stand to benefit most: older adults, people living alone, and anyone whose trust shouldn't be the product.

The same idea, applied to healthcare

Bird is one expression of a bigger conviction. Our second product line brings the same offline-first philosophy to behavioral health.

Clinicians lose enormous amounts of time to documentation, and most of the tools built to help them route sensitive patient information through the cloud. We're building software that keeps that information where it belongs — inside the practice's own walls. It's HIPAA-aligned by architecture, with formal certification on our roadmap. Same principle as Bird: the most sensitive information in a person's life shouldn't have to leave the room to be useful.

What's new at Orracle

A few things we're excited about right now:

• We have a working Bird. It's real, it's built, and we're demoing it — not a render, not a someday.

• We're preparing pilots in aging and senior care, focused squarely on the social isolation the Surgeon General warned about.

• We've filed patents on the core technology behind both product lines, protecting the ideas while we get them into the hands of the people who need them.

• We're building in public. This blog is where we'll share progress, lessons, and the occasional honest look at what it takes to build trustworthy AI as a small, independent company.
